ETHYDCO Reaffirms Commitment to Environmental Sustainability by Participating in “Plastic-Free Beaches” Campaign

As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental protection and support for national initiatives within its corporate social responsibility framework, the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO) sponsored and supported the main event of the “Plastic-Free Beaches” campaign. The event was held at the "Champions of Determination" public beach in Ras El-Tin, under the patronage of Vice Admiral Ahmed Khaled Hassan, Governor of Alexandria, and coincided with World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, with a focus on coastal environment conservation.

The ETHYDCO delegation was led by Eng. Hisham Riad, Chairman and CEO of the company, and included several company executives. The campaign also saw the participation of the Head of the Central Administration for Tourism and Resorts (on behalf of the Governor of Alexandria), representatives of the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, the Alexandria Drinking Water and Wastewater Company, and a large number of divers and volunteers.

The campaign aimed to promote sustainable development and raise awareness among beachgoers about the importance of keeping beaches clean, particularly from plastic waste, which poses serious threats to marine and coastal ecosystems. Activities included beach clean-up efforts carried out by volunteers aged between 5 and 60 years, along with seabed cleaning led by volunteer divers.

In his speech during the event, Eng. Hisham Riad reaffirmed ETHYDCO’s dedication to protecting the environment through implementing the highest environmental standards across its operations. He highlighted that ETHYDCO has developed an integrated waste management system for all types of hazardous and non-hazardous waste and is expanding the adoption of circular economy practices, especially recycling, to minimize waste-related pollution.

He emphasized that the campaign reflects ETHYDCO’s vision for sustainable development and community awareness, noting that addressing environmental challenges requires collective responsibility. Every individual has a crucial role to play, not only by participating in such initiatives but also by adopting responsible consumption habits and proper waste management.

He concluded by reiterating ETHYDCO’s belief that preserving the environment is a shared responsibility that calls for collective action. He expressed the company’s continued support for environmental initiatives aimed at protecting coastal and marine life. He also extended his gratitude to all partners involved in the campaign, including government entities, civil society organizations, and volunteers, noting that such efforts help instill a sense of belonging and social responsibility in future generations.

In recognition of ETHYDCO’s role, Colonel Ahmed Ibrahim, Head of the Central Administration for Tourism and Resorts, on behalf of the Governor of Alexandria, presented Eng. Hisham Riad with a commemorative shield in appreciation of ETHYDCO’s sponsorship of the event and its continued efforts in supporting environmental initiatives and protecting marine life.
