As part of Egypt’s ongoing efforts to advance the green economy, the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) has awarded the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO), affiliated with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, the Water Footprint Report Verification Certificate. The certificate was issued through the Environmental Performance Unit of EOS, acting as the accredited verification and validation body, making ETHYDCO the first petroleum company in Egypt, Middle East, and Africa to obtain a verified and certified Water Footprint Report.
Dr. Eng. Khaled Soufi, Chairman of the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) and President of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), stated that granting the verification certificate to ETHYDCO represents a successful model for implementing international standards within the industrial sector and highlights the importance of scientifically measuring and managing the environmental impact of industrial activities.
He added that EOS continues to play its national role in enabling Egyptian companies to adopt international standards in support of sustainable development pathways, including the efficient use of natural resources and the mitigation of industrial environmental impacts. He noted that Water Footprint Reports are among the most important tools for helping organizations assess water consumption, analyze water sources, and develop plans to improve water-use efficiency. Furthermore, corporate commitment to environmental disclosure in accordance with international standards enhances global confidence in Egyptian products and strengthens their competitiveness in markets where environmental sustainability is a key requirement.
Chemist Hesham Riyad, Chairman and Managing Director of ETHYDCO, emphasized that this achievement reflects the implementation of the directives of Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, to expand the adoption of environmental sustainability practices and enhance resource efficiency. He explained that ETHYDCO launched the Water Footprint Project based on its firm belief that sustainable water management is one of the fundamental pillars of modern industry.
The study was carried out by the company's General Department of Environmental Protection in cooperation with the relevant company departments and PetroSafe, applying the latest scientific methodologies. This enabled the company to identify opportunities for improvement, optimize water consumption, and enhance the efficiency of water resource management.
He further noted that comprehensive technical data on water consumption were collected, analyzed, and thoroughly reviewed in accordance with the highest standards of data quality and accuracy. A highly reliable Water Footprint Report was subsequently prepared and successfully fulfilled all technical verification requirements set by the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality.
